Several testimonies reported by those who have experienced the horror of the filtration camps clarify that the process of separating minors from their parents it often happened already in those circumstances. Parents were told their children would follow a faster path of control and that they would be reunited with their loved ones later. Instead, adults and children were often loaded onto different coaches. Of the former, only 30% actually returned homewhile the latter were almost always sent to Russia.

After blitz (failed) aimed at the physical elimination of the country’s ruling political class, troops would have to file all civilians, house to house. There were four categories for adults: the unrecoverable (for whom the only solution was definitive suppression), the re-educable (for whom forced labor was foreseen), the collaborators (who had lent themselves to supporting the Russian authorities) and finally the people ready to be absorbed in Russian society. For the children, the question was linked to their chronological age. Infants and toddlers could be deported and converted from an early age to the Russian language, growing up as Russian citizens. Adolescents, on the other hand, were a problem to be isolated. Dmytro Lubinets, Human Rights Commissioner of the Ukrainian Parliament, hannounced the discovery of detention cells and torture chambers for Ukrainian children and adolescents from which, with violence and terror, the Russians would have extorted all kinds of confessions.

In oblast’ of Kherson and Kharkiv, the ZSU is currently collecting the testimonies of undernourished, beaten, harassed and intimidated children. A boy reports being left without food for a long time, receiving only a glass of water every two days until a gun was held to his head simulating execution. To extract non-existent information from him, the Russians shot within inches of his neck, terrifying him to death. Another boy tells of the screams of a friend tortured for hours with electrodes until his tongue is blackso swollen you can’t close your mouth. Volunteers who entered Bucha, Irpen, Hostomel, Borodyanka and Izium after the Russian occupation saw the corpses of children as young as four who were raped and hacked to pieces, castrated, bound and burned.
The persecution of children in Ukraine is a heinous crime. It is disgusting to know that someone who has never even been here has resisted sending arms to defend these people and calling the aggressor what it is: a terrorist state.
